At Presence Psychology, we specialise in mindfulness-based therapies to help individuals gain greater self-awareness, reduce pain, stress and anxiety, and improve overall well-being.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the awareness that emerges through paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to things as they are. It a gentle and intentional awareness of the present moment.
Why is Mindfulness beneficial?
A common experience when we learn how to become more mindful, is that this practice allows us to 'wake up' to what is real in the present, without the fog created by negative thoughts about the past or future. Please see the Evidence section for the scientific research that supports Mindfulness - based therapies for a wide range of health conditions.
Most of us are distracted by the 'noise' in our minds; including negative self talk, worry loops, planning, rehearsing worse-case scenarios, and wishing things to be different. A clearer and calmer awareness is only possible if we are paying attention to the present moment. For example, Tom is smiled at by someone but he doesn't see or feel the smile, or return it. Why? Because Tom was too distracted by other thoughts and feelings unrelated to the present moment, such as a bad sleep, health stress, or relationship stress. We all need the skills to feel more connected to life with a clearer lens. This reduces suffering.
